What Are Cold Corners

Cold corners happen where two exterior walls meet at the corner of a building, and also where an internal frame meets an external frame. These areas often lack proper insulation coverage, creating thermal bridges that allow heat to escape. The corner framing typically consists of multiple timber studs and blocking.

Most standard insulation products struggle to fit properly into these corner spaces. The irregular shape and multiple framing members make it difficult to achieve complete coverage. This leaves gaps that compromise the thermal envelope performance.

These thermal weak spots show up clearly on thermal imaging cameras. You can see the heat loss patterns exactly where the corners meet. The temperature difference between properly insulated wall sections and cold corners can be significant.
