Insulation Grants NZ – EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes Insulation Grant Expanded

Family of three mum dad and little girl in their home

The EECA Warmer Kiwi Homes programme helps New Zealanders make their homes warmer, drier, and more energy efficient. It provides funding towards the cost of insulation for eligible households, reducing the upfront cost of these important upgrades.

The Government has expanded the Warmer Kiwi Homes programme, and around 300,000 more New Zealand homes may now qualify for insulation support. At Absolute Energy, we want to explain what has changed and what this could mean for your home.

What is the Warmer Kiwi Homes Grant

Warmer Kiwi Homes is run by the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Authority, known as EECA. The programme funds insulation and heating upgrades for eligible homes across New Zealand.

Since it began, more than 170,000 insulation and heating projects have been completed. Many families now live in warmer, drier homes because they received help through the programme.

Good insulation keeps heat inside during winter and helps stop homes from overheating in summer. It also makes a noticeable difference to power use, which is becoming more important for Kiwi households as energy costs rise.

Insulation Grants NZ – What Has Changed

From 5 August 2025, the Government has widened the eligibility rules. This means many homes that previously missed out may now get support.

The biggest change is for households in deprivation deciles 5 and 6. These homes can now receive a 50 percent insulation grant. This support was not available before and opens the door for a large number of middle-income families.

Other updates include:

  • Homes in decile 7 will continue to receive insulation grants, but their rate has changed from 80 percent to 50 percent.
  • Homes in decile 8 will still have access to an 80 percent insulation grant.
  • Homes in the highest-need groups, including deciles 9 and 10 and those with a Community Services Card or SuperGold Combo Card, will continue to receive up to 90 percent funding for insulation.

What This Means for Homeowners

Insulation is one of the best upgrades you can make to create a warmer, healthier and energy efficient home. A well-insulated home holds heat for longer, stays more stable in temperature, and reduces dampness. EECA reports that good insulation can save around $340 per year in heating costs for the average home.

With the updated insulation grants nz programme, many homeowners can now reduce the upfront cost of insulation by half or more. Even if your home did not qualify in the past, the new rules may now make you eligible.

How to Check if Your Home Qualifies

Warmer Kiwi Homes grants for insulation are available to:

  1. Homes built prior to 2008
  1. Occupied by the homeowner and located in an eligible area OR
  1. Owned and occupied by a holder of either a Community Services Card or a SuperGold Combo Card

Your eligibility is based on where you live, your home’s deprivation decile rating, and whether you hold a Community Services Card or SuperGold Combo Card.

If your home sits in deciles 5, 6, or 7, it is worth checking again. The new rules may now give you access to a 50 percent insulation grant. If you are unsure give us a call on 0800 423 454.
