Why Wall Insulation Is The Missing Piece In Most New Zealand Homes
The Cold Truth About New Zealand Homes
You’ve got insulation in the ceiling. You’ve got it under the floor. So why is the lounge still cold at 7pm with the heater going?
For a huge number of New Zealand homes, the answer is sitting inside the walls, or rather, it isn’t. Wall insulation is the piece almost everyone skips, and it’s quietly costing you every winter.
At Absolute Energy, we see this every day across the top of the South Island. Homeowners in Nelson, Tasman and Marlborough are spending more on heating than they should, simply because their walls have no insulation in them.
Why So Many Homes Have No Wall Insulation
The age of a home plays a big part here. A large portion of New Zealand’s housing stock was built before modern insulation standards were introduced. Homes built before 1978 were typically constructed with no insulation at all, including in the walls. Homes built prior to 1978, the only way to get insulation into a wall cavity was to pull the linings off, so it was treated as a renovation job rather than an insulation job.
That’s no longer the case. Blown-in wall insulation means we can fill the cavity through small holes in the internal linings, with no strip-out and no renovation. Most homes are done in a day.
How Building Regulations Have Changed Over the Years
New Zealand building regulations have gone through several updates over the years, and insulation requirements have improved. The New Zealand Building Code has required insulation in new residential buildings since 1978. However, these regulations only applied to new builds, meaning the existing housing stock was largely left untouched.
More recently, the Healthy Homes Standards introduced mandatory requirements for rental properties, covering heating, ventilation, moisture ingress, draught stopping, and insulation. While these standards require ceiling and underfloor insulation to meet minimum R-values, wall insulation is not directly mandated under the Healthy Homes Standards. This means many rental and owner-occupied homes built prior to 1978 still legally have no wall insulation at all.
How Much Heat Are You Losing Through Your Walls?
Walls make up the single largest surface area of any home. Heat moves from warm areas to cold areas, and without insulation in the wall cavity, there is very little stopping that heat from escaping straight through your external walls. An estimated 30 to 40 percent of the heat in your home is lost through uninsulated walls.
Cold walls also contribute to condensation and dampness. When warm indoor air meets a cold wall surface, moisture in the air can settle on the wall, leading to mould growth and poor air quality. This is a common problem in older New Zealand homes and is one of the key reasons families experience respiratory issues, particularly through the winter months.
Signs Your Home May Have No Wall Insulation
- Rooms feel cold even when the heating is running
- You notice condensation or damp patches on internal walls
- Your home takes a long time to warm up
- Heating costs are higher than expected for the size of your home
- You can feel cold air radiating from external walls when you stand near them

How We Retrofit Wall Insulation
The good news is that you don’t need to gut your house to fix this. In most cases we can insulate your walls through your interior linings.
Absolute Energy is an authorised CosyWall installer. CosyWall is a blown-in system built specifically for retrofitting the walls of existing New Zealand homes, and it’s been installed here since 2002, so it isn’t a new or experimental product, it’s two decades of proven use in Kiwi housing stock.
The install works through small holes drilled through the internal linings, depending on what suits your home. The cavity is filled completely. No re-clad, no renovation, no moving out.
Not every house suits every method. That’s why we assess first and quote second providing professional advice.

A Warmer, Drier Home Starts With the Walls
Ceiling and underfloor insulation are important, and if you do not have them, they should be your first step. Wall insulation is the missing piece for a huge number of New Zealand homes, and it is a solution that makes a noticeable difference once in place.
Getting your walls insulated is one of the most practical things you can do to improve your home’s warmth, reduce moisture problems, and bring your heating bills down.
